Zifunyanwa ngabatheni? Parcelling out food during the South African lockdown

Sivuyisiwe Veronica Wonci critically reflects on her experience with food parcels during COVID19 in Plettenberg Bay and questions the impact of social policy architecture that targets the ‘deserving poor’.

 

“Zifunyanwa ngabatheni iifood parcels?”,which translates as “Who qualifies for food parcels?”has been a key question amongst community members in Plettenberg Bay ever since the local municipality started to deliver food parcels in this South African town during the lockdown.
